          Redesigning the D1M Logo: A Minimalist Approach


The order for the redesign of the logo D1M was already the second version of the agency’s design, which I created for the client because when he first approached me, his idea was clear: to improve the existing logo but keep the symbol. The issue was that two worked with somewhat of a problematic task, how to implement a complex pictogram with different font styles for ­“DATA1MEDIA” plus several other factors that were supposed to be minimal as their got as requirement.  The client also wanted to keep a monotone black color 

  • The Problem:

Normally, I tried meeting the requirements posed to me. However, I saw a chance to offer another version. Given that I recommended developing a new design, this time a design that looks complicated but yet it is simplistic in its approach and communicates the right message to the targeted audiences. My concern was on a classic looking design that would sell through just the brand name across every format and orientation without any unnecessary curves or elements of design.

 At any rate I managed to bring instead a more concise solution eliminating those which the client wished to keep in the final variant. The final decision was focused on designing a well-proportioned and attractive logotype which, at the same time, effectively presented the brand of D1M. The process itself was very pleasant; the customer had a clear understanding of what they wanted and provided accurate comments which made the whole interaction smooth. It was a good and productive relationship where the results were satisfactory.

The D1M logo which is presented here is stylistically modern yet minimalistic. It emphasizes on uncomplicatedness and lucidity using bold and simple fonts which makes the name noticeable as a brand.

 
                  

By the very nature of the design, the visible elements can be defined as follows:

  1. Typography: The large "D1M" text appears to be an all-caps word in a sans-serif typeface rendering a modern and corporate feel to the design. The lettering is in bold although altered slightly and the “1” isplaced within the figure constructive to the legibility of the other letters.
  2. Pictogram: Within the “D1M” word, the letters “D” and “1” form a pictorial element. The design elements are simple pictogram thus enabling compact designs without additional fittings.
  3. Color Scheme: The main logo is black and white in color, creating a more uncomplicated look. The black base with white wording is a good contrast rendering the designed highly legibility and flexibility of design in applications.
  4. Supporting Text: Beneath the “D1M” is the statement “DATA1MEDIA” which is smaller and in a thinner sans serif. This provides some sophistication in the design while indicating what the brand is and its full name. This text being less heavy creates an interesting contrast with the dominating “D1M” thus aiding to the overall balance of the composition.


In general, the logo combines an austere design with an energetic presence, which allows it to be used in many different situations and dimensions and still retains the feeling of modernity and professionalism.
